Surgical site infections (SSI) are infections that develop after a child has an operation.
To prevent SSIs, children receive appropriate baths or wipes as well as antibiotics prior to surgery. Our surgical teams ensure the environment and equipment used during the procedure are sterile.
When a child experiences a surgical infection, they can become very sick, and they have to stay longer in the hospital for additional care and treatment.
We measure the number of infections following neurosurgical shunt and orthopedic spine surgeries at our hospital. Our last surgical site infection for these procedures was May 2023.
