Research areas
My research focuses on elucidating the neurobiology underlying impulsivity and motivation as they relate to poor health behavior. My research utilizes functional magnetic resonance imaging and specialized behavioral tasks from the fields of neuroeconomics and decision neuroscience. I apply these methods both at VCU and the Richmond Veterans Affairs Medical Center to understand mechanisms of poor self control in substance use disorder, suicidal behavior, poor self-care in disability, and also to help explain adolescent risky behavior. I also study the neurocircuity of motivation in childhood psychiatric disorders.
