What are the eligibility requirements for SHIFT?
Participants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Adolescent or young adult (ages 16-22) with type 1 diabetes
Current endocrinology patient at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU
Have a motivated parent or caregiver who is willing to participate with the adolescent/young adult
Have a stable internet connection and access to a device with a webcam (e.g., smartphone, tablet or computer)

Take the SHIFT eligibility screener today!
Note: Both the adolescent/young adult and parent/caregiver need to complete their respective eligibility screener.
Families will be in one of two groups. One group will have six monthly meetings with a certified diabetes education and care specialist discussing topics related to transition preparation (like how to find an adult provider) and diabetes management (like what to do when you’re feeling burned out). The other group will receive monthly materials via email about health care transition for 6 months. All participants will complete assessments at the start of the study through 12-months of follow-up.
What will I learn?
In SHIFT you will learn how to how to manage your T1D with independence and confidence as you become a young adult. Topics include but are not limited to: how to find an adult provider, how to manage your insurance, how to fill prescriptions, how to schedule appointments, what to do when you’re feeling burned out, and how to work with your parent as a team in this journey of transitioning from an adolescent to a young adult with T1D.
Can I pick my group?
You cannot select your group. Families will be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to their group. Random assignment is an important part of strong research, to make sure that our study is not biased and that the results are fair. To participate, you must be willing to participate in either group.
What will I receive for participating?
Participants compensated for completing assessments (up to $155). Your participation will also help advance science in this area, so that we can continue to improve care for adolescents and young adults with T1D.
How much does it cost to participate?
This research study is offered to you at no cost.
How long is the research study?
The SHIFT study is 6 months for the active program, with follow-up assessments through 12 months (1 year total study commitment).
How do I sign up?
Find out if you are eligible to participate in SHIFT by filling out our online screener. Both the adolescent/young adult and a parent/caregiver needs to complete the screener.
