Getting kids back to being kids

Children with conditions resulting from trauma, illness or a congenital condition receive specialized care from the our physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors. We provide care for outpatient visits, inpatient stays and at the bedside in an acute setting. 

Our mission is to restore cognitive skills and physical mobility to kids who face temporary or permanent physical disabilities or loss of function. Our therapies focus on the whole child, addressing not just the medical issues, but also the physical, psychological, social, developmental and vocational concerns involved in the loss of motor or cognitive skills.  

We help children with: 

  • Daily living activities

  • Social interaction skills 
  • Cognition  
  • Speech and communication 

Conditions we treat 

Children from birth to age 21 may be scheduled for daily therapy, or one to two hours per week, depending on the diagnosis. Rehabilitation programs are individualized for the following conditions:  

  • Amputation (orthotic and prosthetic evaluation) 
  • Baclofen pump evaluations (medication for spasticity) 
  • Brachial plexus injuries (nerve damage affecting the shoulder) 
  • Brain injury, multiple trauma (See TBI Clinic
  • Burns 
  • Heart health 
  • Cerebral palsy 
  • Chronic pain 
  • Deconditioning and myopathies following prolonged critical illness 
  • Muscular dystrophy and neuromuscular disorders 
  • Myelodysplasia (malfunctioning bone marrow) 
  • Neurologic disorders, including stroke  
  • Obesity 
  • Pain disorders 
  • Pressure sores 
  • Rheumatologic disorders 
  • Spasticity management 
  • Spina bifida 
  • Spinal cord injury 
  • Sports injury 
  • Torticollis (abnormal head or neck position) 

Team-based treatment 

Your child's care team will be led by a pediatric physiatrist who will coordinate services with a variety of other specialists. Depending on your child's condition, the team may include specialists in:  

  • Assistive technology 
  • Day patient coordination 
  • Nutrition 
  • Pastoral care 
  • Physical, occupational and speech/language therapy 
  • Psychology 
  • Rehabilitative medicine 
  • Respiratory therapy 
  • Social work 
  • Therapeutic recreation 

The child's family, including siblings, are important members of the team. All are encouraged to participate in care planning and treatment to ensure that support continues at home.
