Providing the best care for injured kids

The Clary, Ellis, Foster and Trotman families counted on the team at CHoR when their kids faced traumatic injuries and their worlds turned upside down. They made the right choice. We’re the only Level I pediatric trauma center in the region – and we just earned re-verification from the American College of Surgeons. This means we continue to offer the highest level of trauma care available for kids in the country.

“When seconds matter, families turn to CHoR for lifesaving care through our Level I pediatric trauma center,” said Elias Neujahr, CHoR president. “The care provided by our trauma team has always been stellar. Now our new Children’s Tower includes a dedicated pediatric helipad, emergency department and trauma bay that can flex to care for additional patients as needed, providing this skilled team with better resources than ever to care for kids in critical need of their expert care.”

Earning Level I pediatric trauma center re-verification

The re-verification process is designed to ensure that trauma programs continue to provide the high-quality care required to identified as a verified Level 1 center. The recent process at CHoR involved an in-depth review of our program, which includes coordinated and detailed efforts for everything from injury and violence prevention to urgent clinical treatment and follow-up care. During the review, two physicians with the American College of Surgeons noted many strengths, including:

    • Trauma medical director and trauma program manager
    • Collaboration between the adult and pediatric trauma programs
    • Nursing education and low nurse turnover
    • Trauma and critical care education offerings
    • Collaborative care with the PICU
    • Pediatric follow-up trauma clinic
    • Rapid response to urgent operative cases
    • Burn center
    • Injury prevention program
    • Dedicated pediatric social worker
    • Trauma program leadership involvement in the regional trauma system

“The needs of an injured child are complex and wide-ranging. The team at the Children’s Trauma Center has dedicated our efforts to assuring that every need can be met and exceeded right here in our new Children’s Tower,” said Dr. Jeffrey Haynes, director of the Children’s Trauma Center. “While we have a very strong focus on prevention, serious accidents still occur. When they do, every specialty is immediately available to assure an optimal recovery, including mental health resources. Accordingly, we are proud to have received our most recent and fourth triennial verification as a Level I pediatric trauma center for the benefit of all children across our commonwealth and beyond.”
